Gwiz’Ineza Launches Its Activities on International Women’s Day 2026

23 March 2026 · Kigali, Rwanda

Older people and their living conditions are a growing concern in our society. In Rwanda, the Gwiz’Ineza Foundation, officially registered in August 2025, has chosen to play its part in improving the well-being of our elders, our parents and our grandparents.

To mark International Women’s Day, the Foundation’s board chose, on 23 March 2026, to pay tribute to a group of older women and to reward them for their contributions across many areas of life.

A first, in partnership with Nsindagiza

This first event was made possible through a collaboration with the Nsindagiza organisation. The guests included thirty older women dressed in the mushanana, Rwanda’s traditional attire, together with some thirty adults, men and women from the one or two generations that precede old age.

Following a word of welcome from the representative of Gasabo District, the Foundation’s President, Mrs Lydia Umupfasoni, introduced Gwiz’Ineza to the participants and, through them, to the wider public: officials, partners, beneficiaries and everyone with an interest in ageing and the lives of older people.

The Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion was represented by its Director General, Mr Silas Ngayaboshya,

who addressed the audience.

From a family commitment to a recognised foundation

For several years, long before Gwiz’Ineza became a foundation, Albert and Lydia had committed themselves to providing material support to the oldest and poorest members of the community, helping them meet their most basic needs, in the Bugesera region. Around a dozen of them receive this support every month through a young volunteer dedicated to the cause.

That volunteer, Faustin Serugendo, a 31-year-old mason, takes care of buying and distributing the goods. For this day of celebration, he gathered the beneficiaries and travelled with them by bus to Kigali, to the offices of Gasabo District. There they were welcomed by the organisers of an initiative that has recently become an officially recognised foundation, now working hand in hand with the institutions responsible for supporting people as they age.

Honouring remarkable women

The oldest guest of honour, Mama Catherine Katarabirwa, aged 86, travelled from Bugesera District in Eastern Rwanda (Kamabuye Sector, Kampeka Cell) to accept the Foundation’s invitation.

A programme full of sharing and emotion

On behalf of the Nsindagiza organisation, Mrs Thérèse gave a presentation on the role of older women in nation-building, in this case Rwanda, Land of a Thousand Hills.

Mrs Jeanne d’Arc Bora of the Mba Hafi organisation explained how the family support system she works for operates, and shared information about the care services available across the country and in the area where she works.

Singer Liliane Uwamabera offered the audience two moving musical moments, while the poet Antoinette captivated the room with a poem dedicated to mothers and grandmothers. At the opening and close of the three-hour event, Mrs Thérèse invited everyone to join in a prayer of thanksgiving.
